G&L Consultancy Ltd have purpose built laboratories based at the Somerset and Northern Ireland Offices with H-type filtering glove boxes for the analysis of bulk samples for the presence of asbestos. G&L Consultancy Ltd holds UKAS accreditation for the analysis of bulk samples to identify all of the six regulated asbestos fibre types in accordance with the HSE document ‘Asbestos: The analysts’ guide for sampling, analysis and clearance procedures.’ (HSG248)

G&L Consultancy Ltd operates a pre-arranged ‘same day turnaround’ service for a large number of clients whereby samples are received in the morning and the report e-mailed to the client by the end of the day. For particularly urgent single samples that are delivered to the laboratory, they can be analysed while you wait and enjoy a coffee in our rest area. The analysis report can then be produced for you when you are ready to leave.

All sample analysis observations are recorded on TEAMS (The Electronic Asbestos Management System) which means that the reports can be downloaded from our client portal at your convenience or just stored there for future reference.

G&L Consultancy Ltd offers competitive prices for bulk sample analysis which can be delivered to the laboratories from anywhere in the country. Further price reductions are available for guaranteed regular batches of samples or large batches.

Following the analysis of samples submitted to the laboratory our consultants would be pleased to provide any advice necessary regarding results obtained and further actions required.

Over time, more than 3,000 products have been developed that contain asbestos; a great many of these were used in the building trade. The only way to be sure whether a material contains asbestos is to have it analysed.

G&L Consultancy Ltd are members of the TEAMs Sample Exchange Program, built directly into TEAMS, the Sample Exchange allows samples collected by one TEAMS consultancy to be “checked out” to another TEAMS consultancy with a lab.

Once received by the lab, the samples can be downloaded from the Sample Exchange and “checked in” to appear automatically in the TEAMS lab screens ready for analysis.

Once the normal TEAMS sample analysis process is complete, the Sample Exchange automatically collects the results, classifications and PDF bulk reports and delivers them back to the original consultancy.

Bulk sample analysis involves the examination of a representative sample of a material thought to contain asbestos.

In our analytical laboratory, the sample is first examined by eye, and then a more detailed examination is undertaken using a low power (x20) stereo microscope. Fibres observed in the course of these examinations are categorised tentatively on the observable physical characteristics and, on this basis, are drawn from the sample and placed in the appropriate Refractive Index (RI) liquid.

Once mounted in the correct RI liquid, the fibres are then positively identified as one of the six regulated asbestos types on the basis of their detailed optical properties using polarised light microscopy (PLM) with a magnification of x150.

As necessary, one or more representativeasbestos-bulk-sample-analysis-242px-2 sub-samples may be prepared mechanically and / or chemically for further examination. A good example of the need to take sub-samples is with Vinyl Floor Tiles, where the tile itself might contain asbestos and / or the bitumen adhesive layer might contain asbestos.

Based on the type(s) of asbestos fibres contained in the sample, the look of the sample and the description of the sample from the sampler, G&L Consultancy Ltd will classify each sample as one of the following:

  • Asbestos Insulation / Coating – pipe lagging, limpet, flock;
  • Asbestos Insulating Board – sheets, panels;
  • Asbestos Cement – sheets, panels, rainwater goods, pipes;
  • Textured Coatings – artex;
  • Asbestos Textiles / Paper – ropes, cloth, gaskets, washers, strings;
  • Well-bound Material – bitumen roof felts, sink pads;
  • Reinforced Composites – vinyl floor tiles, toilet seats, window sills;
  • Unknown – for any sample too small to be able to classify.
