The BOHS P402 course is a requirement for all survey staff in UKAS accredited survey companies and is the recognised industry standard for all asbestos surveyors.
The course provides background and practical knowledge in the surveying of buildings for asbestos. It also provides general guidance on management procedures necessary to minimise exposure to any identified asbestos.
Candidates for this course are expected to be aware of the contents of HSG 264 (Asbestos: The Survey Guide) and have a minimum of six months prior experience of assisting on asbestos surveys. Furthermore, candidates are expected to have had training which covers the core competencies outlined within the foundation material detailed within Table A9.1 of HSG248 (Asbestos: The Analysts’ Guide July 2021). This can either be achieved by in-house learning or through the P400 foundation module.
The syllabus comprises of five sections:
- Building construction and the use of asbestos
- Survey types
- Bulk sampling and material assessments
- Survey reports
- Quality control
Who is the course for?
- Asbestos surveyors, or managers of surveyors and surveying teams
- Asbestos re-inspectors, or anyone that undertakes asbestos re-inspections
- Those who require a detailed understanding of asbestos surveying principles (e.g. asbestos report writers, architects, building surveyors etc.)
How long is the course?
The course comprises of 16 hours of study time – at least 12 of which are taught (teaching and practical). The further 4 hours are to be completed as independent study in your own time. There is a total of 3 hours examination time which includes 1 practical assessment and 2 written examinations.
A successful completion of parts A, B and C within 12 months will mean you are presented with a Proficiency Certificate in Surveying and Sampling Strategies for Asbestos in Buildings.
